Wigginton is a small, commuter village 30 miles north-west of London and near Tring. In Victorian times it was best known for straw plaiting and was part of the Rothschild estate and therefore a site for seeing Muntjack deer and where the Glis Glis (an fat dormouse-like creature) was introduced to the area. Six Glis Glis were brought to the U.K. in 1902 as part of Baron Rothschild’s wildlife collection and now number at least 10,000 throughout the Chilterns, very cute but causing much damage, yet they are a protected species! The world-famous Champneys health resort is located in the village, first opened in 1925 as a health farm this stately home of the Rothschild family pioneered holistic health. Set in 170 acres of parkland, having undergone a recent £14million refurbishment, it can offer top-class yoga, snooker, swimming, Pilates, manicured grounds, all in an historical atmosphere. There is also a school, village hall and 2 churches (Church of England and Baptist). The Greyhound pub is a popular lunch venue for walkers - the wealth of walking paths encompasses Bull’s Wood, on the outskirts of Wigginton. The pub offers overnight accommodation, as does the self-catering cottages at Wick Farm and of course Champneys
