Situated on the slopes of a small valley near the River Windrush and some 9 miles east of Cheltenham is the typical old Cotswold village of Guiting Power, it`s limestone houses clustering around a sloping village green. There has been a settlement here since the Saxon times and the foundations of a Saxon church have been excavated and preserved near the present church. The church of St.Michael is Norman in origin and has one of the best preserved Norman doorways in England, the church has been much altered, the restoration of 1903 provided corbel heads of reigning monarchs. The small coffin on the steps leading to the Font was found under the chancel and is believed to be one of the smallest Saxon sarcophagi ever to have been found. Guiting Baptist Chapel was built in 1835 and is a fine example of a village chapel. Many of the buildings were restored in the mid-20th century - although some may have lost a little personality - all combine to make Guiting Power one of the prettiest in the Cotswolds. Guiting Grange is a stylish house of 1848 set in a nice little park. The Guiting Festival, held at the end of July, features classical music and jazz and attracts many world famous acts. The area around Guiting is prime walking country, the Diamond Way long distance footpath passes through the village, and the Farmers Arms in the village and the Hollow Bottom Inn on the road leading to Winchcombe provide a welcome rest for tired feet.
