4 miles south-east of Cirencester, just off the old Roman Ermin Way (the A419) lies the village of South Cerney. Founded in the 1st century it has grown to become one of the largest villages in the South Cotswolds, once a farming community, water now dominates. South Cerney sits at the northern edge of the Cotswold Water Park, a collection of around 140 lakes created by gravel and sand extraction. Set up in 1967 the Park has 40 different lake owners hosting a variety of water borne activities including 10 lakes of SSSI status, and around 100 miles of footpaths and cycleways. The recorded history of South Cerney goes back to the Saxons and the Norman church of All Hallows is probably built on the site of an earlier Saxon church. The church has been much altered but retains some of the old with the new, the 14th century chancel is decorated with ball & flower decoration and the carved wooden head of Christ (believed to be 12th century) in the rood is a work of great intensity. St.Edwards Collage was founded in 1834 by Anne Edwards to house the widows of clergymen and in Station Road (the railway closed in 1961) is an attractive row of 16th & 17th century gabled cottages. The popularity of the nearby attractions has greatly increased over the years but South Cerney still retails all the charm of a Cotswold Village.
