Southminster is a town in the Maldon district of Essex, on the Dengie peninsula. It lies about three miles north of Burnham-on-Crouch and fifteen miles south-east of Maldon town. Dengie 100 is a peninsula of land to the east of Chelmsford bounded by the North Sea to the east, The River Crouch to the south and the River Blackwater to the north. A market was recorded in Southminster in 1218, which is the earliest recorded market in the Dengie 100. The market closed in 1937 leaving only the auction house in Station Road. 20 miles from Chelmsford, the nearest large town, the town has gained from employment opportunities at the nearby Bradwell Power Station. Guided tours of the power station and the hands-on exhibits are available by appointment. Bradwell Environmental & Outdoor Education Centre at Bradwell Waterside has a variety of water and land based activities including archery, mountain biking and abseiling and is open between April and October. The town has a handful of pubs including the Kings Head, White Horse, Queens Head, and the Station Arms. Southminster displays one of the original Essex village cast iron pumps, built in 1832, and the parish Church of St. Leonard’s dates back 800 years.
