Alfriston is in the stunning Cuckmere Valley: towns and villages close by include Berwick, Litlington, Selmeston and Wilmington where the impressive "Long Man" can be seen. Eastbourne and the seaside town of Seaford are also close. The jumble of historical buildings in Waterloo Square is the heart of the village. The Clergy House, a 14th Century thatched cottage, is next to the parish church of St Andrews. Visit The Star Inn, a hostel which changed its function in the 1500s and became an Inn. A good day out is Drusilla’s Zoo with a variety of animals from crocodiles to fruit bats and meerkats, it also has a safari train and bouncy castle. The English Wine Centre is a next door, offering tastings of the many fine wines now produced in Sussex. The Village Festival in August has something for everybody, and the village annually hosts a Dickensian evening in December. Whatever your reason for going or however long the visit you’ll enjoy a few days in this Sussex village.
