The scenic fishing town of Balbriggan is becoming increasingly popular as a holiday destination. Located on Ireland's east coast, it has wide, golden beaches, exhilarating seaside walks and an 18-hole parkland golf course that welcomes visitors. Balbriggan also serves as an ideal base for sightseeing, and it's only twenty miles from the great historic and contemporary attractions of Dublin, the capital city. Balbriggan's principal beach is sandy and safe, patrolled by lifeguards in the summer season. It's overlooked by a tall, round Martello tower, one of a number built in the 1800s as a defence against Napoleon's army. The harbour is older still, dating back to 1761. Here, it's nice to stop a while, take a photo of the lighthouse (minus its original dome) and watch the fishing boats sail in and out. There are plans to update the harbour area, following a major housing development in the north of the town. Balbriggan enjoys wonderful views over the Irish Sea, its colonies of seals and County Down's Mourne Mountains from vantage points on the coastal pathways, the viaduct, the golf course and Ardgillan Castle, the town's big visitor attraction. The castle, actually an 18th Century manor, is known for its beautiful gardens.
