Dingwall is a burgh town in the Highlands of Scotland situated 10 miles north-west of Inverness, at the head of the Cromarty Firth. Dingwall received its royal burgh status in 1226 and was an important market town. Dingwall’s name comes from the Norse for ‘Parliament (or meeting place) in the Valley’ describing the towns importance as far back as 800BC with the arrival of the Vikings in Scotland. Dingwall is an ancient town with many buildings made of fine red-stone, architecturally interesting buildings include the tollbooth which houses the museum; the 18th century Town House; St. Clements Church built in 1801with the Pictish symbol stone in the churchyard; the impressive Sherrif Court and to the north-east Foulis Castle. The harbour was built c1820 by Thomas Telford and was an important port in Dingwalls history. Dingwall is a popular place for visitors it has hotels and holiday accommodation and is ideally located as a base for touring the Highlands. At the east end of the high street is the railway station, which arrived in 1865 and operates the Far North Line, the town has a busy high street with a variety of shops, cafes, restaurants and pubs. Dingwall hosts a Music Festival with traditional Highland music and a Highland Games each summer.
