Eyemouth is a small historic town in the Borders region of Scotland situated five miles north of the Border with England at the mouth of the River Eye where it forms a natural harbour as it flows north into the North Sea. Eyemouth was granted Burgh of Barony in 1597. The town has been a working fishing harbour since the 13th century and is a popular seaside resort with golden sand beaches on the Berwickshire coast. Eyemouth is surrounded by beautiful scenery ranging from countryside to coastline with high rugged cliffs full of nesting sea-birds, sandy coves and fishing harbours. There are shops, pubs, hotels, self-catering holiday accommodation, caravan and campsites and a choice of places to eat. Historically interesting features include the grand Gunsgreen House linked with alleged smuggling during the 18th and 19th centuries, the remains of Coldingham Priory, originally founded in 1098 and Cocksburnpath Parish Church dating from c1500. The Auld Kirk houses the Local Museum and Visitor Information Centre, which displays a tapestry dedicated to the fishermen who lost their lives in the Great East-coast Fishing Disaster of 1881. Activities include diving, golfing and walking with cliff-top and countryside walks and the town trail which starts at the museum and travels around the local landmarks. Local festivals include the Herring Queen Festival in July and Smugglers Christmas.
