Newport (in Welsh - Casnewydd) is Wales’ third largest city with a population of over 140,000 . Newport stands on the banks of the river Usk between Cardiff and Bristol. Newport got its name when nearby Caerleon ( the old port ) fell out of use as ships got too large to navigate up the river but ,of course, Newport has a much older heritage as the ruins of the C12 castle near the city centre can testify. Today Newport benefits from much investment and regeneration . There are the usual out of town shopping opportunities but also some quaint and unusual ,city centre, outlets . Newport is proud of its newly built Riverfront Arts Centre and is home to the luxurious Celtic Manor Resort which hosts the Wales Open Golf Tournament. Golfing enthusiasts should note that Newport will also host the Ryder Cup in 2010. The Newport Transporter Bridge is one of the few remaining bridges of its type but, if social history rather than industrial inspires you, visit Tredegar House a fine C17 building and don’t miss the local Cwmcarn Forest Drive with its magical sculptures and storytelling spaces, set amongst breathtaking views - it’s a hidden gem
