At the heart of Cardigan Bay Aberystwyth or Aber as it is often affectionately known is proud of its reputation as an unspoilt seaside town which is also the setting for a vibrant, university culture and the home of the National Library of Wales. Aber’s reputation as a friendly, academic community has spread far beyond Wales, but you don’t have to be a student to enjoy the beautiful rural surroundings, the recreational opportunities and the lively bars, café’s and restaurants that make Aberystwyth and its surroundings attractive at any time of year. Aberystwyth’s arc of promenade stretches from the electric cliff railway at the northern tip to the ruined castle ( 12c in origin ) at the southern. The seafront, the camera obscura and the original university buildings are all reminders of past Victorian splendours . In the streets behind the sea facing guesthouses and hotels, shopping opportunities abound ranging from high street standard to Welsh crafts and specialist “deli’s”. Approaching from the south, the coast road sweeps through Aberaeron with its picturesque harbour and melange of pastel painted Georgian houses – stop, if you can, for honey ice-cream at The Hive on the Quay . The journey can sometimes be slow but with scenery that visitors have favourably compared with Australia’s Great Ocean Road why hurry - better to pause and watch for dolphins and seals. Early in the New Year it is worth making a detour north to nearby Borth beach where the winter tides scour the sand away exposing one of Europe’s few petrified forests, hidden from view for the rest of the year. Historically many people in Wales have held a belief that Aberystwyth could have been chosen as the nation’s capital and with its diverse natural features and local attractions this belief is easy to understand.
