The village of Hilderstone in Staffordshire lies to the South of Stoke on Trent and is set in the rolling countryside that forms part of the agricultural heritage of Staffordshire. The village can trace its history back to around 670 AD and signs of the old strip and terrace method of farming is still evident today. When you visit you may wonder as to why the village has adopted the wolf as its logo and the answer is quite simple. The village may actually have taken its name from the Anglo Saxon Hildewulf’s Ton meaning warrior wolf town. The village may have first been settled in 670 AD but it was not until the early 19th century that it acquired its church – Christ Church – with its tall spire stretching up some 40’ from its tower. Christ Church also has the reputation of being one of only two churches in England from this period that has not been altered since its original construction – a concession to the modern day though is the electric lighting however the original candleholders are still visible today on the ends of the pews. It is easy to appreciate why the village of Hilderstone is popular today with residents and visitors. The village retained a lot of character over the years but it offers easy access to the motorway network and there are plenty of local activities to enjoy, apart from the surrounding countryside Alton Towers, the Trentham Estate and Gardens and the Wedgewood Museum are all easily accessible.
