Ancoats is an interesting inner city part of Manchester in the county of Lancashire. It was known as the first industrial centre, although before the Industrial revolution arrived with a vengeance life was quiet in the farms and cottages that were dotted about during the Medieval period. It is renowned for its industrial heritage which played its part in the growth and prosperity of the area, with hat making, glass works, engineering, and the noisy rattling Cotton Mills. The population swelled with the arrival of Spinners, Weavers, and immigrants from Europe. Resulting in rows of terraced houses, known as back to backs being built for the textile workers, although many of these were eventually torn down in the 60's leading to a new generation of houses and buildings. A stroll around the streets will uncover a wide range of architecture from the now hushed Mills, new buildings, and a collection of pubs and restaurants, and with the close proximity of the City Centre there is a fabulous range of shops, and night clubs to explore. At the southern edge of Ancoats a stroll down Redhill Street will lead to the Rochdale Canal which was built in the 19th Century to deliver raw materials, and transport finished items from the Mills which will certainly appeal to photographers and artists.
