Travel back in time to Henry VII’s reign and you will find a rural community relying on agriculture and to supplement their income spinning yarns and weaving in what was a major cottage industry. Horwich though did not gain fame until around 1884 when the Lancachire and Yorkshire Railway Company decided to build a new railway works in the town. The effect on the local economy was startling – the local population rose to 13,000 and for the next 80 years the loco works at Horwich was the major employer and finally closed its doors in 1983. The railway station that serviced the town was closed in 1967 and today the line that led to it is now the Old Station Park which as used for recreation and as a short cut to the east side of the town from the town centre. Horwich has always demonstrated an ability to adapt and so it was that in 1995 that a new football pitch for Bolton Wanderers was laid and is today the surrounding area is taken up with an out of town shopping park. The town centre is being improved with local stores actively improving their aspect by installing more traditional shop fronts to improve their properties whilst Horwich is still able to boast a well attended market.
