Ilminster is a rural town set in the English county of Somerset. The town lies a little to the east of the intersection of the A303 London to Exeter road and the A359 Taunton to Axminster road, having been bypassed a few years ago. The town gets its name from the River Isle and its large church dedicated to St Mary but also know as The Minster. Ilminster is mentioned in documents dating from 725 and in a Charter granted by King Ethelred in 995. The church is made from Hamstone, a colloquial name for stone quarried from Ham Hill in Somerset. Construction of St Mary's originally started in the 15th century. You can visit the nearby National Trust house at Barrington Court. This is a restored Tudor manor house with beautiful Gertrude Jekyll inspired gardens. It also has a working kitchen garden. Ilminster Grammar School was founded in 1549 and served the town for 422 years until 1971. In 1819 Queen Victoria (then a baby) spent the night at The George Hotel, Ilminster's principal coaching inn, now converted to private housing. The Unitarian Meeting house built in 1719 is now called The Meeting House and serves as an art gallery, concert hall and café. It also hosts the Ilminster Tourism Information Centre.
