Born 1672. Died 1719 - English politician and essayist.


A distinguished classical scholar, his literary career began with a poetical address to John Dryden (1693) and an Account of the Greatest English Poets (1694). Elected an MP for Malmesbury (1708), he kept the seat for life. He contributed to Richard Steele’s periodical The Tatler, and together they founded The Spectator in 1711.
