Lancaster's history can be traced back several thousand years and some of it has been remarkably bloodthirsty – public hangings, witchcraft and the slave trade have all been part of Lancaster’s history. In 1612 James I was in the throne and obsessed with witchcraft he made it a capital crime and Witchfinders travelled the country seeking out those who practiced this art. To the South East of Lancaster is Pendle Hill and it was here that the notorious case of the Pendle Witches was to begin its story resulting in the women from two local families who were subsequently hanged at Lancaster Castle. This medieval castle was responsible for handing out more death sentences over the years than any other in the country, Lancaster deserved its nickname “The Hanging Town” Lancaster’s history stretches back to Roman Times and previous visitors also included the Anglo-Saxons gaining a charter as a market town in 1193. It wasn’t until King George VI’s coronation in 1937 though that Lancaster became a city. It was however during the 1800’s that Lancaster’s wealth became apparent when many grand buildings were erected amongst them the former Town Hall in Market Square and now the City museum and the Palladian Custom House now the Maritime Museum. It has to be remembered that as well as industry making a contribution to the wealth of the City that the maritime trade also had a valuable role to play as the third busiest port in England after London and Bristol. Today it boasts a University a Victorian Cathedral, the Williamson Park itself extending to some 54 acres with the Ashton Memorial (an Edwardian folly) overlooking Lancaster and providing views to the Fylde coast. Lancaster provides a wealth of architectural delights set in truly cosmopolitan surroundings. Residents and visitors alike can enjoy the annual Jazz Festival which usually takes place in September, take the time to enjoy a cycle ride taking advantage of its extensive cycling network or revel in the wide range of shops that are locate din two well established shopping centres – and don’t forget to explore the narrow lanes where there are more unique shops, restaurants and pubs for residents and visitors to enjoy.
