In the picturesque Coquet Valley, near Simonside Hills in Northumberland, is the town of Rothbury, with the river Coquet running through it and which at one time was surrounded by ancient forest. Rothbury is an ancient barony, although from 1095 it was held by the Crown, it then passed through various hands, before finally becoming the property of the Percy family in the 1330’s. It is rumoured that the Jacobite Rebellion started in the Rothbury neighbourhood in 1715 and continued to be a Jacobite centre, with reports of spies continuing for some time after the rebellion had been crushed. Sir William Armstrong in 1863 bought a large estate nearby, which he called Cragside, famed for being the first private house to be lit by hydro-electricity. The Northumberland Central Railway arrived in 1870 and helped the town to grow and improve. The Jubilee Hall was built in 1887 and became a vital part of the cimmunity. Rothbury now stands in the heart of agriculture area and has been a market town renowned for the sale of livestock. The river Coquet is popular for fishing and the town holds a festival in July each year, making this a popular spot amongst tourists.
