Bacup is to be found lying about 18 miles north of Manchester in the Rossendale Valley, Rossendale is a tract of land jutting out westwards from the Pennines rising to over 1500 feet, in an area that was formerly known as The Forest of Rossendale. Bacup is one of the more major towns in the area long famous for its mills and wool production. Its economic reliance based on its geography, moorland which was ideal for sheep meant that its success was firmly rooted in wool production and processing. Between 1840 and 1849 twenty cotton mills were built in Rossendale and between 1850 and 1859 a further forty five mills were built in the area, today many of these mill premises are given over to the production of footwear, everything from carpet slippers to trainers and boots. The attraction though for visitors and residents alike though is the open countryside and the surrounding moorland with its variety of trails which are ideal for those walkers and ramblers who require demanding trails. The seasons bring a variety in countryside views and extremes that no-one can fail to be impressed with, from the bleak snow covered moorland in winter through to an exhilarating walk along the Riverside Park, part of the Rossendale Way. Mountain bikers, hikers, are all to be found in this area throughout the year enjoying the local terrain and hospitality which is to be found in many of the local pubs.
