The South Gloucestershire village of Alveston is 13 miles (21k) to the north of Bristol and close to the town of Thornbury (3 miles - 5k), it lies at the southern end of the Vale of Berkeley. There has been human activity in and around Alveston for millenia, the Alveston Barrows on the outskirts of the village date from the Mesolithic age (about 4500 B.C); in 2001 two pot-holers exploring a local cave found an underground chamber, the floor of which was strewn with animal and human bones along with pot shards. They were dated to be around 2000 years old - the late Iron-Age / Roman period - and some of the human bones showed signs of cannibalism. Alveston has always been in the shadow of it`s larger neighbours; the population in 1770 was only 205. The Ship Inn dates back to 1598, a former coaching inn it was the meeting place of the South Gloustershire Medico-Convival Society, one of the earliest medical socities in Britain. Edward Jenner, who achieved worldwide fame through his vaccination work, was a member and othen visited the Inn. St.Helens old church was set away from the village and was replaced by a new rock faced church in 1885, some of the furnishings and two bells were used in the new church. Other buildings of note in the village are; the Jubliee Hall built in 1887 and the Cross Hands on the village green. Alveston serves as a gateway to the first Seven road bridge and many residents work in the large towns & cities returning to enjoy the calm of the village.
