Ettrick is a remote village in the Borders region of Scotland situated close to Selkirk, approximately 45 miles from Edinburgh. Ettrick is famous as the birthplace of the author James Hogg, known as the Ettrick shepherd, who wrote in both Scots and English, a memorial stands on the site of the cottage where he was born. Historically interesting features include the 18th century Ettrick Kirk, with a memorial stone in the Kirk-yard dated 1619. Ettrick sits in the beautiful and tranquil Ettrick Valley, which runs for 26 miles along the river from Potburn to the eastern edge of Selkirk. The village is surrounded by the Borders hills, ancient forests, picturesque scenery and an abundance of wildlife including otters, badgers, red squirrels, rare butterflies and a selection of birds, Ettrick is a popular tourist destination ideal for walking and cycling with self-catering holiday accommodations, hotels, inns, shops and places to eat. The Ettrick waters offer excellent fishing facilities and are abundant with salmon. Attractions include Halliwell’s House Museum and the Bowhill House and Country Park which has a James Hogg exhibition. The Borders Woollen Trail is an informative tour with a look at the local textile industry both traditional and modern; the area is renowned for fine tweeds and cashmere.
