Walkerburn is a small village in the Borders region of Scotland situated on the north side of the River Tweed two miles east of the village of Innerleithen and 8 miles from Peebles. Settlers to the area date back to the Pictish period, 600-700AD with the remains of ancient terraces discovered on Purvis Hill and Plora Hill. The village grew around its woollen mill established in 1850 and was an important area in the local textile industry, many Borders towns and villages are still well-known for producing tweed, tartan and cashmere and The Scottish Museum of Wool Textiles is located in Walkerburn Walkerburn is tranquil and picturesque surrounded by beautiful scenery and a variety of wildlife, the village has a hotel and restaurant, shops and amenities. Historically interesting features nearby include the ruin of the 16th Elibank Castle a fortified manor house home of the legendary Muckle Mou’ed Meg. The historic spa, St Ronan’s Well, built in 1827 is located in the neighbouring village of Innerleithen, the sulphurous waters were believed to have healing powers by the Victorians, Innerleithen also has a golf course, shops and a hotel. Canoe Tours are available in the river Tweed as well as fishing for Trout and Salmon. There are driving tours to visit the many Border Abbeys including the great abbeys at Kelso, Melrose, Jedburgh and Dryburgh.
