Tamworth is home to two important features from very different ends of the history spectrum. Tamworth Castle was originally a Norman motte and bailey castle which was originally added to in subsequent centuries. Today it still stands proud overlooking the town centre and the confluence of the Rivers Tame and Anker. The castle has enjoyed entertaining royalty throughout its history and today visitors are treated to a snapshot of history with interactive activities, in particular “The Tamworth Story”. Tamworth is also famous for its Snowdome – first opened in 1984 this was the first indoor full sized slope for skiing and snowboarding on real snow in the UK. Today the Snowdome still attracts thousands of visitors every year to enjoy the facilities. There is however more to Tamworth, tracing its history back to medieval times, then during Norman times the town was divided between Warwickshire and Staffordshire – the boundary ran through the centre of the town and remained so until 1888 when a local government act was passed and Staffordshire became its county borough. Central to the growth of Tamworth was its communication links, the canal system and coach roads to the North from London were further enhanced with the coming of the railways. Motor transport also played an important part in the history of Tamworth as it was here that the Reliant Motor Company was first established in 1935 by Mr TL Williams and this was where the Reliant Three Wheeler car was produced for some 63 years. Today Tamworth has much to offer, the rich history of St Editha’s Church – the only church in the England with a double spiral staircase, the church was first established here in 963AD. The town hall was originally built in 1701 and standing outside is a statue to Sir Robert Peel, founder of the Metropolitan Police and famed member of Parliament. Whatever your reason for visiting Tamworth you can be assured that it will be an interesting experience with so much of the old and the modern combining to provide this town with the diversity that makes Tamworth the town it is today.
