Cupar is a busy market town and former Royal Burgh in Fife, situated on the East coast railway line between the larger towns Dundee and Glenrothes. Cupar was established as a Royal Burgh by David II of Scotland in 1363 and was the location of the castles of the Mac Duffs, Thanes of Fife featured in Shakespeare’s play Macbeth. The town has many architecturally interesting buildings including the neo-gothic St. James Church (1866) and the Burgh Chambers with its grand neo-classical terrace, crowned with dome and clock cupola in 1819. The Corn Exchange dates back to 1861-2 and the Old Parish (St Michael of Tarvit) Church, in Kirk Wynd is noted for its 15th century tower. Hopetoun Monument on Mount Hill looks like a giant chimney stack. It was erected in memory of the 4th Earl of Hopetoun who died in 1826. Substantial estates and farms circle Cupar a magnificent surviving building is the Hill of Tarvit Mansion House and Garden now a national trust for Scotland property. Cupar is home to Elmwood College an agricultural college that hosts a farm and a golf course. Cupar has an unusual nine-hole Golf Course situated on the side of a hill to the south of the town.
