Scarborough has history aplenty behind it - a Roman signalling station; Viking settlement and destruction of the town; Civil War sieges; and of course the medieval fair that has spread the town's name worldwide via the folksong recalling it. But above all it is a seaside resort of some splendour. As a resort Scarborough was first developed because of its acidic springs that saw a spa grow in the town in the 17th century. To complement the waters taken internally visitors began to enjoy them externally in bathing from the town's lovely beaches. The success of the healthy holiday saw the building of the Victorian Grand Hotel that still dominates part of the town's skyline, put up to coincide with the coming of the railway in the 1840s. Scarborough still enjoys great rail links, with a line from York and another from Hull connecting it to the world. The heyday of the long seaside holiday may be past, but tourism is still very significant in the town, and there are some tremendous attractions, a miniature railway connecting some of them. There is a spectacular old-fashioned promenade; the much-restored harbour, a great place to walk, and still with stalls selling fish to the public landed fresh from the North Sea. Peasholm Park is another place for a stroll, with its Japanese pagoda and the boating lake where the Battle of the River Plate is recreated in miniature daily in the season. There are some less obvious attractions too: the Stephen Joseph Theatre previews Alan Ayckbourn's plays as it has for years; and out of season, on Shrove Tuesday, it has its celebrated Skipping Day (for details see our Folk Customs section); and the Regency and Victorian architecture of the town can be admired year round. Scarborough is on the doorstep of the North York Moors if visitors need a change of scenery, but it may be difficult dragging the children ˆ and adults - away from the town's famous sands.
