Hampstead, in north-west London, is more like a small country village than a metropolitan suburb. It has its own charm and atmosphere deriving from the narrow roads and lanes, delightful cottages, historic houses and a long tradition of art, music and literature. The roll call of world-renowned residents is too long to list, but painter John Constable is buried in Hampstead, and poet John Keats' Grade I-listed house and garden is open to the public, as is psychoanalyst Sigmund Freud's family home, now a museum. Other notable buildings include Kenwood House, a stunning neo-classical mansion exhibiting a priceless collection of paintings, the 17th Century Fenton House with its orchard and kitchen garden, and 2 Willow Road, one of the country's finest examples of Modernist architecture. Hampstead Museum is contained in the Grade I-listed, 18th Century Burgh House at the centre of the village. Camden Arts Centre is also worth visiting. The 800-acre Hampstead Heath is hugely popular for its many sports and its varied landscape of meadows, woodland, heathland and ponds, three of which are famously available for male-only, female-only and mixed swimming. Needless to say, Hampstead houses come with a hefty price tag: this is one London's richest areas.
