Guildford

Bustling county town

Guildford, the County Town of Surrey , is only 30 miles from London and easily accessible by road, rail and air. This historic town offers excellent shopping; combining the cobbled High Street which is criss-crossed by narrow streets filled with shops , cafes and restaurants , with modern purpose-built arcades. Close by are the remains of Guildford's Norman Castle , surrounded by a spectacular display of flowers and plants, and Guildford Museum , home to local history and memorabilia of two well-known inhabitants of the area: Lewis Carroll and Gertrude Jekyll . For evening entertainment the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre frequently previews West End plays. Guildford Cathedral , built earlier this century, provides a fine contrast between the old and the new and the River Wey runs through the town centre offering an easy route from the town to the country.

Guildford is a gateway to the beautiful Surrey Hills , Area of Outstanding Natural Beautyand its pretty villages are home to splendid National Trust properties, stately homes and delightful gardens. A year round attraction can be found at Wisley: the RHS Garden is delightful during every season. A different garden experience is provided at Painshill Park , a restored 18th century landscape garden.

A wide range of accommodation is available to suit every taste from cosy guest houses to four star hotels .
